Broward County is the home location of Berman & Tsombanakis LLC’s office and one of 3 main counties that we operate in. (Miami-Dade County and Palm Beach County being the others). The population of Broward County is nearly 2 million, making it the second most populated county in the state behind Miami-Dade County. Its county seat is Fort Lauderdale. Broward County is the eighteenth most populous county in the United States and one of three counties that comprise the South Florida metropolitan area.
Broward County was created in 1915. It was named for Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. It was one of the counties at the center of the 2000 U.S. Presidential election recount controversy. Most famous for its beaches, Broward boasts many other notable attractions. The Museum of Discovery and Science is located in Ft. Lauderdale. The International Swimming Hall of Fame is located on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. The Hall of Fame for Sport Fishing in located in Dania Beach. Butterfly World is located in Coconut Creek. Sawgrass Mills, one of the nation’s largest and busiest shopping malls, is located in Sunrise. Also, the NHL’s Florida Panthers play their games at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise. There are also multiple entrances to the Everglades parks.
Long thought of as a haven for northern retirees, the population numbers tell a different story. The population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.
The median income for a household in the county was $41,691, and the median income for a family was $50,531.
In terms of the Judiciary, Broward County comprises the entirety of the 17th Judicial Circuit of Florida. The 17th Circuit is comprised of all the cities and municipalities in Broward County, including; Coconut Creek, Cooper City, Coral Springs, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, Lighthouse Point, Margate, Miramar, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Parkland, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Sunrise, Tamarac, West Park, and Weston. There are 4 Courthouses that serve the people of Broward County. The Main Broward County Judicial Center is the “Main” or “Downtown” Courthouse, located at 201 S.E. 6th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. Most complex and serious civil and criminal cases in Broward County are handled at this Main Judicial Complex. All “circuit” civil matters as well as all felonies are handled at this location. In addition, there are 3 Regional or Satellite Courthouses; The North Regional Courthouse at 1600 West Hillsboro, Blvd., Deerfield Beach, Florida 33442,the South Regional Courthouse at 3550 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, Florida 33021, andthe West Regional Courthouse at 100 N. Pine Island Road, Plantation, Florida 33324. Many misdemeanors (depending on where they occurred) and some “county” civil cases are heard at the regional courthouses. Most traffic infractions and crimes are often heard at these courthouses as well. Jury Trials are not held at the satellite courthouses. If a jury trial is demanded, then the case is moved to the Main Courthouse, which accommodates jury trials.
